The cast of Modern Family in real life

begin >>

Modern Family has been one of America’s favorite family sitcoms since it first premiered in 2009. Nine seasons later, Modern Family is still going strong and has won too many awards to even count. Yes, the show’s writing is fantastic, but the success is really owed to the incredible ensemble of cast members who are all unique, but equally amazing and hilarious.

In the world of television, nine seasons is a lot. Tons can happen during that time, not only do the characters develop and become more interesting the more we get to know them- but the actors and actresses themselves also change quite drastically. Most (but not all) of the stars on the show were unknown actors or actresses before landing their role on Modern Family. Due to the series’ insane high-ratings and tremendous popularity, the once unknown actors and actresses quickly became celebrities and their lives were forever changed. Several of the main characters on the series started off as young children or teenagers, and have grown in front of our eyes into young adults.

Although sometimes it is hard to face the fact that our favorite television family is not actually a real family (as much as we wish they were), the cast mates do actually consider themselves as a “family” of sorts, considering they have spent so much time together. Of course, the truth is that they all have families and lives of their own. And although Mitch and Cameron are the perfect couple and serious relationship goals, in real life they each are in separate relationships.

Some of the actors and actresses on this list are similar to the role they play on-screen, while others are actually the complete opposite. While some of the characters haven’t changed much since the first season, others are unrecognizable…

Ed O’Neill as Jay Pritchett – Then

Jay is considered the patriarch of the Pritchett family. He is Claire, Mitchell and Joe’s father and Manny’s step-father. He is married to his young and beautiful Colombian wife Gloria. He was the owner of Pritchett’s Closets & Blinds but has since passed it down to his daughter Claire. Being a war veteran and an old-fashioned man, Jay is known as having a “tough” and “manly” personality, but he has shown us many times that he is a caring, sweet individual deep down who loves his family very much. Jay is also extremely competitive and stubborn – traits that he’s passed down to Claire and Mitchell, making them feel the need to always be right.

Ed has been acting since the ’80s, but landed his first big role as Al Bundy in the long-running sitcom Married with Children. Similar to his role on Modern Family, the now 71-year-old is indeed a family man and has been married to his wife Catherine Rusoff since 1986. The couple have teenage daughters who are (coincidentally) named Sophia and Claire. Sophia has started acting on her own, and even appeared in a small role on Modern Family with her dad. Aside from Married with Children and Modern family, Ed also had a part in mini series The 10th Kingdom, and played a lead role in the short-lived crime dramas Big Apple and Dragnet.
