Ahhhh, is there anything better than going on vacation? You’ve got a week off work, you have no annoying co-workers to deal with, you’ve bought a whole new closet to show off your beach body, and you are SO ready to just drink cocktails in the sun for a whole darn week. Absolute bliss. Of course, your vacation doesn’t just start when you reach your final destination. Instead, the moment you leave your house and make your way to the airport, you enter extreme vacation-mode. You treat yourself to a nice breakfast, you spend an absurd amount of money on a book you could definitely get cheaper elsewhere, and you enjoy a little drink in the bar beforehand (y’know, to settle your nerves). Yet, nothing will snap you out of your vacation-mode quicker than a screaming child…
The answer? Not a lot…
So, you may be wondering what you can do about a screaming child. The answer? Not a lot. Yep, we know this wasn’t the answer you were looking for, but it’s true. As much as it is not your place to punish a random child, it’s also not the airline’s place. In their eyes, they have no obligation or power to do anything about a screaming child. If they’re nice, they might politely ask the parents to calm down their child, but they cannot make them do anything. Luckily, you don’t just have to sit there and let this kid ruin your vacation. There are some ways to get some good out of a pretty bad situation…

They might be able to compensate you
No, they won’t give you a free seat upgrade or free flights for life, but flight attendants might be able to compensate you to make you feel more comfortable if you are sat near to the screaming child. They might offer you a free drink, or bag of chips, or even just a free pair of earplugs to make things even easier for you.
Help other parents be more prepared
If you have been on a flight with a screaming child, you’ll know that it can majorly impact your enjoyment of the flight, or even prevent you from getting some much-needed sleep. Yet, if you can help other parents be more prepared, you might be able to help future passengers and their will to live. In fact, the best way to ensure that a child is quiet for the duration of a flight is to ensure that the baby is fed and watered before the plane takes off. If they can also get the baby to sleep before you board the plane – that would be a lifesaver. If all else fails, just make sure that you have a pacifier and entertainment to keep them busy.
Keep yourselves entertained
At the end of the day, listening to a screaming child on your flight is only going to make things worse for you. Instead, you need to try and block out the noise and keep yourself entertained so that you do not hone in on the noise. By taking your book, watching a movie or simply listening to music, you will be able to find solace in the fact that you are trying everything you possibly can to block out the screaming child.
You need to patient
Also, you just need to be patient. While the noise is irritating and may ruin your vacation vibe, you also need to realize that flying in a tin can can’t be comfortable for a baby or toddler. It will scare them, it will confuse them, and it will make them feel uneasy – which means that they will probably cry. Sometimes you just need to realize that that’s life!
Having a screaming child on your flight is not something you would choose to have, but sometimes you just have to give in and let them do their thing.
